CampBlood Homo Horror Features: So Readable They Hurt

The Spell   1977

Lee Grant, Susan Myers, Helen Hunt
Finally, a MOTW with a message: fat girls are evil.

In this trashy Carrie knockoff, squeezably soft Rita is picked on because of her weight and decides to get revenge on her tormenters in the best way possible: by boring them to death. Yes, although the whole “teen witch” premise could potentially yield some white-hot hijinx, here it is horribly mishandled. Lee Grant plays yet another frustrated mother of an evil supernatural being (“Damieeeeeeeeeeenn!!”), and it seems like half of the scenes take place in the foyer of the suburban house, which looks just like the entry of a Chi-Chi’s. On the whole very disappointing, although those of us who hated climbing the rope in gym class may get a chill or two, and it’s nice to see that Helen Hunt was precocious and bird-faced even as a teen.
