Snowbeast   1977

Bo Svenson, Yvette Mimeaux, Clint Walker, Sylvia Sydney
A snowy take on Grizzly (which is already a rip-off of Jaws), with a touch of Ice Castles thrown in for extra sudsy drama, Snowbeast feels like a good excuse to get some very large men in ski pants.

A Yeti is doing some serious damage to a swank ski resort. After ripping off the face of Susie Chapstick, the resort’s manager Tony (Robert Logan), attempts to warn his patrons, but his mother (Sylvia Sydney in full raspy glory), who owns the lodge won’t have anything coming in between her and her Winter Carnival. Incidentally, she was queen of that same carnival its first year. Ah! If that ain’t a good reason to risk innocent lives than I don’t know what the world is coming to! With the help of the gigantic Gar Seberg (Bo Svenson), a former gold medallist skier who spends his days fearing becoming a has-been, his hot wife/reporter, Yvette Mimeaux (Anchorwoman in Peril anyone?), and Sheriff Paraday (the even more gigantic Clint Walker), this super charged foursome plan to make the abominable snowman a bit less abominable.

For a small screen ‘Animals Amok’ movie, Snowbeast is pretty good stuff. After some pseudo-philosophical banter about the inhumanity of slaughtering a beast who is only trying to survive, there’s a stellar Yeti attack during the, you guessed it, Winter Carnival. And what good would a Bigfoot movie be without a mass hysteria scene? You won’t have to ponder that question here. Look for a traumatized snow queen and a crushed tiara. The rugged cast (sorry, Yvette) are well up to the challenge of Sasquatch killing and there’s lots of loving looks at some furry monster gloves along with a nice ‘Yeti-cam’. Highly recommended to Bigfoot completists.
