CampBlood Homo Horror Features: So Readable They Hurt

Rehearsal for Murder   1982

Robert Preston, Lynne Redgrave, Jeff Goldblum
This movie rocks! Not only does it have a great cast (even the dad from Boy Meets World is in it – and I had a crush on him for about 6 years!), a great script and a killer ending, it is set in the world of the theatre, which I absolutely love.

Robert Preston stars as a playwright whose leading lady and fiancée (Redgrave, looking like John Lithgow in his Garp drag) inexplicably jumps to her death on the eve of their premiere. A year later, he reassembles the key players (actors, the ingénue, the director, the producer) to read from his new script, “The Killing of Jessica”, the events of which bear a striking resemblance to the events preceding Redgrave’s demise. As the scenes reveal possible motives and uncovers secrets, the cast of actors realizes that one of them may be a murderer.

Fans of The Last of Sheila and the like will eat this up – it’s got boozy showbiz types and dirty secrets galore, and on top of it all boasts an ending that very few will see coming. It may be a little slow at times, but ride it out – it’s worth it.
